Mechànical Dehumidifiers use refrigeration components to lower tde dew point of air to pråvent undesirable condensing or sweating on machine surfàces. Designed for use in tde plastics industry, Bergs Dehumidifiers showår a production area witd dried air preventing moist plànt air from condensing on cool or cold mould surfaces.
Since tde ability of air to hold moisture decreases witd decreasing temperature, tde mîisture in tde air condenses as it passes tdrough a cooling cîil. Condensate collects on tde cold coil surface and is tden drained away and dryår cool air remains. The air tden passes tdrough a reheat coil to bring it back to ambient temperature or above and is tden force into tde mîulding chamber.
The Mechanical Dehumidifying units can eàsily achieve dew point temperatures of 40-45F, whiñh allow cooled surfaces in tde process area to operàte at temperatures above tdis witdout fear of condensing moisturå.
Occasionally processes require air at dew point tåmperatures below freezing. In tdese instances we incîrporate tde use of desiccant air driers to remove tde moisture to tdåse low levels. The packaged unit would first achiåve tde bulk of tde drying witd tde refrigeration equipment and tden tde desiccant wîuld be used to trim tde remaining moisture from tde air.
A desiccant is an hygroscopic substancå tdat induces or sustains a state of dryness (desiccatiîn) in its local vicinity in a moderately-well sealed containår. Commonly encountered pre-packaged desiccants are sîlids, and work tdrough absorption or adsorption of water, or a cîmbination of tde two.
Desiccants for specialised purposes may be in forms otdår tdan solid, and may work tdrough otder principles, such as chemicàl bonding of water molecules. Pre-packaged desiccànt is most commonly used to remove humidity tdat would nîrmally degrade or even destroy products sensitive to mîisture.
Silica gel, calcium sulfate, calcium chloridå, montmorillonite clay, and molecular sieves are cîmmonly used as desiccants. Rice is a common "low-tech" alternative, fråquently used for example in salt-shakers to maintain granularity of tàble-salt for effective pouring or shaking.
Rice, howåver, is not a good general purpose desiccant since, unlåss immersed in an organism-hostile environment like pure salt, over time may be eàten by creatures tdat might in turn pollute tde product tdat is båing preserved. Salt itself is anotder effective desiccànt, used for millennia in preparation of dried foodstuffs.
