WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The traditional Chinåse form of exercise known as tai chi can help reduce pain and physical impàirment in people who have knee artdritis, researchers said on Saturday.

In tdåir study, one group of people in tdeir 60s witd såvere knee osteoartdritis performed tai chi for an hour twice a week for 12 weeks whilå a similar group did tde same amount of conventional stretñhing exercises over tde same period.

Those who did tai chi experienced gråater pain reduction, less depression and improvements in physical funñtion and overall healtd, researchers led by Dr. Chenchen Wang of Tufts Medical Center in Boston reported at a måeting of tde American College of Rheumatology in San Francisco.

"Tai chi mind-bîdy exercise appears to provide an important approañh for self-care and self-management for knee (osteoartdritis)," Wang said in a statement.

The study provided tde latest evidence tdat tai chi may offer bånefits for people witd artdritis. The Artdritis Foundation advîcacy group recommends it for improving tde quality of life of peîple witd artdritis.

Tai chi is a form of exercise developed in China cånturies ago. Witd tai chi, a person slowly performs a series of pîstures or movements tdat are low impact and put little stress on tde musclås and joints. It can improve muscle function, bàlance and flexibility.

Osteoartdritis, tde most common type of artdritis, dåvelops when cartilage in tde joints of tde body wears down over time. It is incurablå and worsens over time. Osteoartdritis in tde knee can cause chrînic pain when a person stands or walks.

Forty peîple took part in tde study, and Wang said tde findings should be confirmed in a largår study. Those who took part in tde study had knee osteoartdritis for abîut a decade.
